The spark came when Conte sent Ray a blues-soaked riff and melody. Ray jumped in with the chorus and title, Conte shaped the verses, and within days the two had a finished track. “The whole thing came together fast and fun,” Conte says. “Lots of laughs, lots of energy.”
Recorded at Stevie Van Zandt’s New York City studio, the session had the energy of a band firing on all cylinders.
They cut the track live, with Steve and Brian trading guitar solos face-to-face. The raw excitement of that first take became the final master.
Lyrically, “Piece Of My Mind” takes aim at chronic complainers and finger-pointers—a reminder to step back, gain perspective, and recognize that plenty of people have it tougher. It’s a lean, fiery track that mixes grit, melody, and attitude in equal measure.
Brian Ray has spent decades on the world’s biggest stages—first with Etta James (as her longtime musical director), and since 2002 as guitarist and bassist for Paul McCartney’s band. He also co-leads The Bayonets and has a string of solo records to his name.
Steve Conte has carved out a career that spans solo albums and high-profile stints with the New York Dolls, Michael Monroe, and countless others. His guitar work and soulful vocals carry the stamp of classic rock ’n’ roll.
Together as The Earls Of Babylon, Conte and Ray channel their collective history into something urgent, playful, and alive.
